This map, produced in 2020 as part of the National Atlas of Spain (ANE), shows annual insolation throughout Spain.
Annual insolation represents the average number of hours of sunshine throughout a year at a specific point. The map shows different regions, which are coloured with a gradient ranging from 1,600 hours per year to over 3,000.
The areas with the least sunlight correspond to the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula, where heavy cloud cover prevents the number of hours of sunshine per year from exceeding 2,000. At the opposite end of the spectrum is the southern half of the Iberian Peninsula, which mostly has annual sunshine exceeding 2,800 hours per year, even reaching more than 3,000 hours at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote also record more than 3,000 hours of sunshine in various parts of the islands.
