The Yuxi Circle (2022)

This map, created by Alasdair Rae in 2022, shows the extent of the Yuxi circle.

The Yuxi circle is a concept, coined by Rae, that aims to represent on a map the smallest circle that encompasses half of the world's population. This idea originally came about in 2013 from Reddit user Valeriepieris, who drew a circle on a map and claimed that there were more people inside it than outside it.

As Rae stated when he first published this map, Valeriepieris' original version fails to represent a circle on the Earth's surface, but rather on the map projection used. This has already been fixed with a few minor modifications by Danny Quah.

Rae's version is an update, with population data available in 2022, so the circle shifts slightly to focus on Yuxi, a city in central China that gives this new map its name.
