This map of the city of Maracaibo was drawn by Venezuelan Manuel S. Soto and published in 1889 by the National Printing Office of Venezuela.
The map, with north at the top, shows the size of the Caribbean city at the end of the 19th century, when it had barely 50,000 inhabitants. At the time of publication, Maracaibo was growing, as evidenced by the presence of the first two tram lines on the map. The first, inaugurated in 1883, ran from the centre, skirting the bay to the south, towards Los Haticos. The second, inaugurated in 1886, ran along the coast in the opposite direction, towards Empedrados.
