Yellowstone National Park (1898)

This map, published by Poole Brothers for the Northern Pacific Railway Company in 1898, shows Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone was declared a national park by the United States government in 1872, becoming not only the first American national park, but also the first of its kind in the world. This level of protection laid the foundations for the protection of the territory and ecosystem, as well as its exploitation for tourism.

This map was published by the Northern Pacific Railway Company, the railway company that served the northern part of the country. At the time of publication, the train already reached Gardiner, Montana, in the northern part of the national park (and of this map).

In this document, the transport company proposed the construction of a railway line to serve the entire national park, which can be seen as a dotted line running from Mammoth (in the top left) to Mount Washburn (in the top centre). This railway was never built.

The map also shows a route marked in red marker, which possibly represents the journey taken or planned by a traveller who was in possession of this map.
