This map, created by Carl Churchill for the Wall Street Journal in 2023, shows the most common migration routes through the Darién region, between Colombia and Panama.
The Darien region, also known as the Darien Gap or the Darien Jungle, is known for being a hostile area that is difficult to traverse. In recent decades, it has become an important passageway for migrants travelling from South American countries to North America. Many people die while crossing this region due to insect bites, injuries from plants, or even flooding.
The map shows the main routes chosen, almost all of which cover a large part of the journey by sea, to avoid the dangers of the jungle. The author also depicts the areas populated by multiple indigenous peoples such as the Guna Yala, Emberá-Wounaan, Madungandí and Guna de Wargandí.
