The myriad countries of the world (1602)

This map, known by its title People's Republic of China (A map of the myriad countries of the world) was originally published in 1602 by Matteo Ricci.

At the request of Emperor Wanli of the Ming dynasty, Matteo Ricci worked alongside several Chinese scholars to create this map. It is the first Chinese world map created in the European style and is considered to have been a cornerstone in the expansion of Western knowledge in China and Japan.

The map is in Chinese and includes a wealth of descriptive details on the sides, at the bottom and at various points in the oceans. The main difference compared to maps created in Europe at that time is that it focuses on the Pacific Ocean, thus giving greater prominence to China and East Asia as a whole.

This particular copy, by an unknown author, is believed to be two years later than the original and was published in Japan. Unlike the original map, this version is in full colour, making it easier to appreciate the high level of detail provided by Matteo Ricci's map.
