Bathymetry and Topography of the Galápagos Islands (2023)

This map was published Heather Chamberlain in 2023 as part of the initiative #30DayMapChallenge.

The combination of bathymetric and topographic maps allows us to appreciate the depth of the territories below sea level (in shades of blue) and those above sea level (in shades of green).

The Galápagos Islands are an Ecuadorian archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, located 972 kilometres off the coast of South America. It consists of thirteen main islands, as well as more than two hundred smaller islands or islets. Of these, only four are inhabited: Isabela, Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal and Floreana.

This map shows how much of the archipelago is connected by an underwater platform just a few metres below the surface. It also shows the steep reliefs on all the islands, which correspond to the volcanoes that gave rise to the archipelago.
