The Shikoku Way (2008)

This map, created by Lingerie for Wikimedia Commons in 2008, shows the Shikoku pilgrimage route in Japan.

The Shikoku Pilgrimage is located on the island of the same name. It is a Buddhist pilgrimage route that covers the 88 temples on the island, stretching over 1,200 kilometres. The route centres on Kukai, an 8th-century Buddhist monk who devoted his life to meditation, visiting different places on the island in search of spirituality.

All the temples are marked on the map, as well as the route, in red. The route begins in Naruto, in the northeast of the island, and follows a clockwise direction. The temples are grouped into four clusters, representing the four provinces that the island had in the Meiji era, as well as the four stages of enlightenment in Buddhism.
