The North Is Not Always Up (2023)

This map was published Antonia Blankenberg in 2023 as part of the initiative #30DayMapChallenge.

The author's illustration uses four different cartographic projections in which north is not located at the top of the maps:

  • Berghaus projection: A projection that divides the globe into five north-south sections, which are arranged in a star shape. It appears in the logo of the Association of American Geographers.
  • Fuller projection or Dymaxion map: A projection that starts with an icosahedron, a polyhedron composed of 20 triangles, and develops it on a plane.
  • Cube projection: A projection that starts from a cube, a polyhedron composed of six squares, and develops it on the plane.
  • Bonne projection: An equivalent-area projection with a heart-shaped form that has historically been used to represent the size of continents.

Here you can read more about the historical convention that placed north at the top of maps.
