This map, created by Neil Parkinson of Púca Printhouse in 2022, showcases the gods and goddesses of the Ancient Egyptian pantheon.
The map shows 27 of the most important divinities of the Egyptian pantheon, as well as their distribution along the Nile, from the delta to its first cataract. The gods in antiquity emerged tied to a territory and a small group. As the ties became more extensive, and as people moved from one city to another, the cults spread over much larger territories.
This map depicts each god at the place where he had his origin and main cult, or where there is evidence of a prominent temple. Twenty-seven recognisable divinities are depicted, spanning an extended period and whose worship was not necessarily simultaneous.
These gods include:
- Ra, the sun god, in Heliopolis.
- Osiris, The god of death and rebirth in the area of Upper Egypt.
- Anubis, guardian of the dead, in the region of Cinópolis.
- Thot, The god of writing and knowledge, in Hermopolis.
- Aton, The solar deity of the pharaoh Akhenaten, in the Amarna area.
- Sobek, Crocodile god, linked to the Fayum and Upper Egypt.
- Anuket, river goddess, in the region of the first waterfall.
The map is not intended to be exhaustive, but seeks simplification in favour of being visually elegant. Simplification is necessary, as it is estimated that there may have been as many as 2000 deities in the entire territory throughout the period of Ancient Egypt.
