This map of the city of Toledo was published by the Geographical and Statistical Institute of Spain in 1879, by order of Colonel José Ibáñez Íbero. The original copy is currently preserved at the National Geographic Institute of Spain.
In that year, Toledo barely extended beyond its historic centre, although it already included the Parque de la Vega, known as the Paseo de Madrid; the bullring, built in 1866; and the Hospital de San Juan Bautista, the name originally given to the Hospital de Tavera after its construction in the 16th century.
Next to the Alcantara Bridge, east of the old city, this map shows Toledo's first railway station, which was in operation between 1858 and 1919. It was completely replaced by the new station in 1919, on the same site.
