This map, published by Wordtips in 2023, shows how a dog's bark is represented in every country in the world.
To arrive at this data, the authors focused on the most widely spoken language in each country of the world, and consulted written sources to determine the most common way of writing a dog's bark in each language. It is curious that, despite the fact that a dog's bark is the same everywhere, each language interprets and transcribes it according to the guidelines set by the language.
Among the most common sounds are the following:
- Hau, Hau / How How (22 countries): form used by Arab countries.
- Wow, Wow (19 countries): common form in Spanish-speaking countries.
- Woof, Woof (13 countries): form used in Anglo-Saxon countries.
- Oaf, Oaf (8 countries): form used in French-speaking countries.
- Au, Au (6 countries): form used in Portuguese-speaking countries.
The map is very interesting, but it also has a methodological flaw, as it does not assess dialectal variants. For example, in the case of the English-speaking countries, although Woof, Woof is the most common form globally, at the local level there are countries that also use Arf, Arf.
