This map, created by Álvaro Merino for the website The World Order and published in 2020, shows the most recognised cheese designations of origin in Europe.
In the European Union and the United Kingdom, there are more than 250 protected cheeses, of which 193 had a protected designation of origin in 2020. This map shows some of the most renowned ones, categorised by type: sheep, cow, goat, and buffalo.
Italy is the country with the most protected designations of origin (53), closely followed by France (49). Spain (26), Greece (22) and Portugal (11) are the other countries with more than 10 cheeses with protected designations of origin.
