Illustrated map of the United States (1942)

This illustrated map of the United States was drawn by Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias and published by Associated American Artists in 1942.

A few months after the attack on Pearl Harbour, The United States was involved in the Second World War, after more than two years of observing from a distance. This made it important to remind the American people of the reasons why they were fighting.

In this map, Miguel Covarrubias shows the most typical and iconic characteristics of each region of the United States, focusing on the country's cultural and natural diversity. With a certain propagandistic slant, the author wants to show the United States as a country that has embraced tolerance towards differences for decades, a country where everyone's identity is respected. And, in a way, that fighting and winning the war is necessary to preserve that vision of the United States.
