Concentration camps in Soviet Russia (1945)

This map, published by Sylvester Mora and Pierre Zwierniak in Rome, shows the concentration camps of the Soviet Union.

Mora and Zwierniak were two Polish officers who, in 1945, published a book on Soviet concentration camps that included this map. It is the first map to show the distribution of the gulags, as the Soviet concentration and forced labour camps were known. This map greatly influenced Western anti-communist propaganda and possibly other popular maps such as Gulag – Slavery Inc. would not have been possible without this.

The authors provided the sources consulted on the map itself to show the location of all the concentration camps at the top. The bottom section details the industries associated with each of the locations shown, and the right-hand side mentions that the list is not exhaustive and that there may have been many more camps than those described.

This map is taken from an English translation, although the original illustration was published in Polish.
