This political map of the Sahara was created by Zhaoxu Sui in 2022.
The Sahara Desert is the third largest desert in the world, the largest if we exclude polar deserts, covering more than 9,200,000 square kilometres. If it were a country, the Sahara would be the fifth largest country in the world, behind China and ahead of Brazil.
This map shows the administrative division of this desert, as well as the main cities and connections that exist. Despite the harshness of the territory, nearly four million people live there, many of them in the coastal areas of Western Sahara and Mauritania. The map also shows important cities in the interior, such as those located on the historic route that crossed the Sahara from north to south: Ghardaïa and Tamanrasset in Algeria; Agadez in Niger; and Timbuktu in Mali.
The legend incorporates details that reveal the cultural and natural wealth of the region, with natural parks, historic centres, oases, archaeological sites, animal reserves and caves.
