This map of the island of Cyprus was created in 2009 by Peter Fitzgerald for Wikimedia Commons.
The map shows the great political and territorial complexity of the island:
- Appears in light grey Northern Cyprus, an independent country de facto, although it has only enjoyed international recognition from Turkey since 1983. Currently (2024), Turkey has 35,000 troops deployed in this region.
- The dark grey area indicates the Green Line, a demilitarised zone under UN control that separates the north and south of the island.
- Appearing in deep brown are Akrotiri y Dekelia, two United Kingdom military bases on the island of Cyprus that have the status of overseas territory.
- The five administrative districts into which it is divided are shown in five different colours. CyprusPaphos, Limassol, Larnaca, Nicosia and Famagusta. Originally, Famagusta and Nicosia extended into the territory now occupied by Northern Cyprus.
