Whaling in the Atlantic (1902)

This map, created by Deutsche Seewarte (German Maritime Observatory) and published by Wagner & Debes, is part of an atlas published in 1902 on the Atlantic Ocean. In this atlas, the observatory details the physical conditions of the ocean through 39 maps, as well as details on the routes that could be used for navigation.

This particular map details whaling conditions in the Atlantic Ocean at the beginning of the 20th century. Due to the limitations of the colours used, the map is divided into three sections:

  • In the central section, covering the entire Atlantic Ocean, sperm whale fishing (in brown) and southern right whale fishing (in grey) are shown.
  • In the top left corner, white whale fishing (in light brown) and blue whale fishing (in dark brown) are shown.
  • At the bottom right, Greenland whaling appears (in brown).

The different numbers and shades of colour denote the intensity of fishing in each region.
