This map, created by Perrin Remounted for the website Visual Capitalist in 2023, shows fishing and aquaculture activity worldwide, according to data from various sources for the year 2022.
Since 1960, fish consumption has skyrocketed worldwide and, with it, fishing initially did too, rising from around 30 million tonnes in 1960 to over 90 million tonnes in 1990. Since then, fishing has remained more or less stable, but aquaculture has skyrocketed from 20 million tonnes per year in 1990 to more than 120 million tonnes in 2020, surpassing fish production.
On this map, the author shows where the world's main fishing production is located, with whiter colours in the seas and oceans where fishing activity is greatest, and dark blue colours where it is non-existent. The coasts of Europe and China stand out in particular, where the world's greatest fishing pressure exists.
In addition, the map uses yellow circles to show which countries have the highest aquaculture production. At the top are China, Indonesia, and Peru.
