Map of Europe, by Gerardus Mercator (1623)

This map, published by Hendrik Hondius in 1623, shows Europe. It is an adaptation of the map originally published by Gerardus Mercator in 1589.

Hendrik Hondius was part of a family of Dutch cartographers who dedicated their lives to publishing and improving Mercator's atlas. In the 1623 edition, signed only by Hendrik Hondius, this improved version of his map of Europe appears.

As a curious detail, this map includes the island of Friesland, in the top left corner. This phantom island was a common error in multiple maps between the 16th and 18th centuries.
