This map is a reproduction of the map of America drawn by Diego Ribero in 1529. The copy was made by Johann Georg Kohl around 1840 and is currently kept in the Library of Congress in the United States.
Diego Ribero's greatest work was the Padrón Real, of which six copies remain. This map is a replica of the American continent as it appears in the 1529 copy preserved in the Vatican Library. The Padrón Real is considered by many historians to be one of the first scientific maps, as it traces America using the latitude measurements compiled by Magellan and Elcano during their circumnavigation of the world.
In addition, the map includes curious references to lands explored by Spaniards: Tierra de Garay, in reference to Francisco de Garay; Tierra de Ayllón, in reference to Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón; and Tierra de Estevan Gómez, in reference to Esteban Gómez.
