This map, published by Hillfighter in 2011, shows the dates on which slavery was abolished in each part of the American continent.
In most countries, the abolition of slavery was preceded by a restriction of its conditions. On the map, the author only marks the final date on which slavery was abolished once and for all.
With its different colours, Hillfighter shows the more than 100 years from when it was declared in the state of Vermont in 1777 until it was achieved in Brazil in 1888:
- 1770–1779: Vermont (United States).
- 1780–1789: Massachusetts (United States) and Maine (United States).
- 1800–1809: Haiti.
- 1810–1819: Upper Canada (Canada).
- 1820–1829: Mexico, New York (United States), Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Chile, Dominican Republic, and Lower Canada (Canada).
- 1830–1839: Canada, Belize, Guyana, Uruguay, and the rest of Canada.
- 1840–1849: New Jersey (United States) and French Guiana.
- 1850–1859: Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.
- 1860–1869: Florida (United States), Texas (United States), Paraguay, and Suriname,
- 1870–1879: Puerto Rico.
