River water discharge into the Mediterranean (2013)

This map, published by the Norwegian NGO GRID-Arendal in 2013, shows the main rivers of the Mediterranean and their discharge.

An average of 10,000 cubic metres per second is discharged into the Mediterranean Sea each year. The flow of the various rivers is not constant, so there is a peak in spring, coinciding with the snowmelt and the rainy season, and a minimum peak in summer.

The map shows the discharge magnitude of the main rivers in the Mediterranean. Blue arrows of varying thickness are used to indicate the discharge flow, with thicker arrows representing greater flow. As can be seen, the Rhône in France and the Po in Italy are the largest rivers in the Mediterranean basin. Together, they account for one-third of all the water discharged into the Mediterranean in a year.
