Which countries have elected a woman as their leader?

This map, published by Statista with data from January 2023, shows which countries in the world have elected women as heads of state or heads of government since 1946. The map excludes unelected positions (such as monarchs) or women who have been in a temporary position to replace someone else during a period of unavailability.

The map shows a range of colours representing the number of women leaders who have been elected in each country:

  • Dark purple (five): Switzerland
  • Purple (four): Finland
  • Light purple (three): Iceland, United Kingdom, Poland, Lithuania, India, and New Zealand.
  • Pink (two): Haiti, Argentina, Senegal, Ireland, France, Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, Denmark, Norway, Latvia, Estonia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the Philippines.
  • Yellow (one): Canada, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, Brazil, Chile, Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi, Gabon, Togo, Liberia, Mali, Portugal, Tunisia, Belgium, Italy, Austria, Germany, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Sweden, Greece, Turkey, Georgia, Israel, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia.
  • Grey (zero): the rest, among which the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Spain, South Africa, the Czech Republic, Russia, China and Japan stand out in terms of importance and relevance.
