Protests and riots in Africa (2004–2024)

This map, published by José Luengo-Cabrera, shows the riots and protests reported in Africa between 2004 and 2024, according to data from Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED).

Protests are shown in blue on the map, while riots are shown in pink. The size of the circle indicates the number of events of each type in different cities. It can be seen that riots are particularly recurrent in sub-Saharan Africa, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Protests, on the other hand, seem to be much more common in the Maghreb and Sudan.

The bottom left shows a graph indicating how protests and riots have increased throughout the period. Of particular note is the increase in 2011, linked to the Arab Spring and the rise in protests in Muslim Africa.
