This map, published by José Luengo-Cabrera, shows the incidents of political violence reported in the Middle East between 2018 and 2024, according to data from Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED).
ACLED defines political violence as any type of event in which force is used to achieve political objectives, whether it be armed conflict, riots or terrorist acts.
The Luengo-Cabrera map focuses on Israel (blue), Palestine (yellow), Lebanon (red) and Syria (purple). The size of the circles determines the number of violent events that have taken place in each location.
The box at the bottom right shows the number of monthly events that have taken place in each country. It is easy to see how the number of events decreased from 2018 onwards in Syria, as the civil war stabilised, and the peaks in Palestine (October 2023) and Lebanon (October 2024), coinciding with Israeli offensives.
