Map of prisoners worldwide (2021)

This map has been produced by Arciom Antanovič with the information available at World Prison Brief, a database containing detailed information on prison systems around the world.

The infographic shows the number of individuals incarcerated in each country in the world per 100,000 inhabitants, using a colour code in which yellow represents countries with the lowest percentage of the population in prison and purple those with the highest percentage.

Among the countries with the largest prison populations, the United States stands out, with 629 people per 100,000 inhabitants, representing more than 0.61% of the country's population. At the opposite end of the spectrum are several countries and regions in Europe, such as San Marino, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, as well as several countries in Africa, such as Gambia, Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
