This map, published by José Luengo-Cabrera, shows the loss of tree cover in Brazil between 2001 and 2023, according to aggregated data from sources such as NASA and Google.
There is a subtle difference between the concepts of deforestation and loss of tree cover. The former refers to the direct effect of human action, while loss of tree cover also includes natural events that can cause the disappearance of forests, such as storms, floods or fires without human intervention.
In the case of Brazil, most of the loss of tree cover is due to direct or indirect human action, mainly the reuse of forest land for agricultural purposes.
