Global geological map of the Moon (2022)

This map was created by a group of researchers in 2022, and later published by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2024.

The illustration shows a geological map of the Moon, the most detailed to date. Among other things, it shows the different geological strata, structures and periods of the formations and rocks present on the Earth's surface.

The legend details the meaning of the different colours, although they can all be divided into two main groups. On the one hand, there are exogenous formations, which include craters and impact basins, and on the other, endogenous formations.

In addition to the main map, detailed maps of the two polar regions appear in the upper corners. The illustration also includes a map of the tectonic plates present on the Moon, on the right-hand side, and a lithological map, on the left-hand side.

The idea behind this map is to aid future research and exploration of the Moon, which is why the Chinese Academy of Sciences has made this detailed study public.
