This map, created by the website Visual Capitalist, shows the BRICS' expansion plans following the historic enlargement agreement approved on 24 August 2023.
BRICS is an economic and trade association formed to facilitate relations between member countries and exert joint pressure in international forums. In part, it is often considered the polar opposite of other collaborative forums such as the G7. Initially, the group consisted of Brazil, Russia, India and China, which were joined by South Africa in December 2010.
The map shows several countries in three different colours, depending on their status in the BRICS:
- In red, the current members of BRICS: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
- In green, the new members as of 1 January 2023: Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, United Arab Emirates, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.
- In yellow, members who have applied to join the group: Bolivia, Cuba, Venezuela, Honduras, Nigeria, Senegal, Algeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia.
The infographic is completed with four graphs showing the group's global weight before and after the agreed enlargement, based on four parameters: gross domestic product, population, oil production, and exports.
