This map was published by French mathematician and cartographer Oronce Finé in 1534 and is currently held at the National Library of France. It is part of a collection of 18 heart-shaped maps published between 1511 and 1566. This particular map uses the Werner projection.
Johannes Werner defined this cartographic projection in 1514, drawing inspiration in part from the work carried out by Ptolemy in the 2nd century, but with the intention of accommodating recent discoveries.
Oronce Finé's map, in addition to its unique projection, also reflects the knowledge and uncertainty that existed at the beginning of the 16th century regarding the actual shape of the world's landmasses. This map is one of the few that connects North America and Asia with a large landmass at the North Pole, which is matched at the South Pole by the typical representation of Terra Australis.
