The Kingdom of Urartu (8th century BC)

This map was originally published as part of the Atlas of the Socialist Republic of Armenia in 1961. This particular map was the work of Aramais Bagratovich Arutiunian, who was responsible for all the historical maps on the map. Both the labels and the legend are in Armenian.

The Kingdom of Urartu, also known as the Kingdom of Van, was a state that existed around Lake Van on the Armenian plateau. It occupied the eastern part of present-day Turkey, as well as Armenia and part of northwestern Iran.

The map shows in pink the extent of the Kingdom of Urartu between 810 and 714 BC. The red line marks the extent in the following century, after the Scythian invasion. The green line marks the territory occupied by the Assyrian Empire in the same period. The dotted lines mark the areas of influence of Urartu (red) and Assyria (green).
