Extension of the Omani Empire (2021)

This map, created by Wikimedia Commons user AbdurRahman AbdulMoneim in 2021, shows the maximum extent of the Omani Empire.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Oman became one of the great trading empires, competing for influence in the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf with major European powers such as Portugal and the British Empire.

Its heyday came in the mid-19th century, when its territory extended across the eastern Arabian Peninsula, took in part of the coast of Iran, and stretched across the eastern coast of Africa, where it established its capital in Zanzibar for a period.

The map shows its maximum territorial expansion in red. It also includes other powers associated with Oman, in pink, and territories claimed by the empire, in pink stripes.
