Map of the city of Pontevedra, drawn by Benito Chías y Carbó, edited by Sixto Vizcaino and published by Alberto Martín in 1918. It is currently part of the Map Library of the National Geographic Institute.
By the 19th century, Pontevedra had lost its city walls and the city had expanded beyond the original boundaries of the old town. At the end of the 19th century, the Alameda was created in 1880 and the railway arrived in the city in 1884. This map shows how the city was already adapting to these changes at the beginning of the 20th century.
To the south of the town, the river Gafos still marked a natural boundary that would remain for many decades, until the river was partially buried in the second part of the 20th century and the Campolongo district was created.
