This illustration, created by Bhabna Banerjee for Visual Capitalist in 2023, shows the physical geography of Sudan, facts about the country's history, and multiple details about the third Sudanese civil war, which broke out in April 2023.

The map shows the country's main cities and their populations marked in yellow: Khartoum (the capital), Nyala, El Obeid, Port Sudan and Wad Madani. Red stars indicate the main areas where clashes took place after the outbreak of violence, mainly in the Darfur region and the capital.

The brown arrows show the migratory flows caused by the civil war, more than 100,000 in the first month, to almost all neighbouring countries: Egypt (42,000), Chad (30,000), South Sudan (27,275), Ethiopia (8,900) and the Central African Republic (6,000).
