This map, published in 2004 by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office, shows the predominant languages in each municipality in the country, according to census data from 2000.
The colours used have two types of intensity, depending on the prevalence of the language. The more intense colours show the municipalities where the majority language is native to more than 85% of the population. Lighter colours indicate where the language is the mother tongue of between 70% and 85% of the population. Each colour represents a different language:
- Green, French.
- Red, German.
- Blue, Italian.
- Yellow, romance.
- In grey, where there is no clear majority language (less than 70% of native speakers).
