This map was created by Spanish cartographer Tom\u00e1s L\u00f3pez de Vargas Machuca in 1768 and published posthumously by his sons in the \u00abGeographical Atlas of Spain<\/a>\u00bb from 1804. The map depicts the province of Toledo with the territorial boundaries prior to the provincial administrative reform carried out by Javier de Burgos in 1833.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ancient province of Toledo bordered the northwest with the province of \u00c1vila<\/a>, to the north with the province of Madrid<\/a>, to the northeast with the Guadalajara province<\/a>, to the east with the province of Cuenca<\/a>, to the south with the province of La Mancha<\/a> and to the south-west with the province of Extremadura<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The province is divided into five judicial districts: Talavera, Toledo, Alc\u00e1zar de San Juan, Oca\u00f1a and Alcal\u00e1. It was larger than it is today, including the territory around Alcal\u00e1 de Henares and the entire south of Madrid, part of the south-east of the current province of \u00c1vila and some towns that now belong to the provinces of Badajoz, C\u00e1ceres and Ciudad Real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
