This map, drawn by Zhu Yulian, was published in 1966 as a supplement to issues 2 and 3 of the magazine Shijie Zhishi<\/em>, a publication close to the Chinese Communist Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The map shows the US military presence in different parts of the world in 1965. The legend distinguishes between military bases built on foreign soil with US support and America's own bases abroad. In addition, all locations where US troops were deployed are also represented by black dots, with the highest numbers in West Germany (250,000), South Vietnam (200,000), Japan (90,000), South Korea (55,000) and the Philippines (40,000). In contrast to the black dots, the flames show the active pockets of anti-US resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The map is accompanied by a heading, at the top, which carries a quote from Mao: \u201cThe tide of the peoples of the world against the US aggressors is unstoppable. Their struggle against US imperialism and its lackeys will achieve even greater victories\u201d. At the bottom, in red, is the full title of the map: \u201cMap of the situation of the struggle of the peoples of the world against the USA\u201d. The text underneath are regional examples of resistance against the United States. Taken together, the map and the accompanying text make this map a good example of Chinese anti-US propaganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The date of publication is no coincidence either. In 1966, the Vietnam War was in full escalation, following the systematic bombing of North Vietnam by the United States. North Vietnam was an important ally of China, so the US presence in the region was seen as a close and direct threat. The aim of the map was to globalise the China problem: what was happening in Vietnam was happening all over the world, and resistance had to be consistent all over the world as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Projection is common in Chinese representations of the world and, in this case, it also serves to limit the space occupied by the United States and enhance the importance of China and its entire region. A similar strategy appears in this other Chinese propaganda map from the same era<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
