Aintablian and drawn by K. Edjouryan, shows the Armenian Diaspora's denunciation of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. The map was distributed through the Armenian Apostolic Church in New York and has captions in Armenian, English and French, showing its intention to reach the widest possible audience.

The map contains no publication date, although the text at the top refers to it being published when Turkey had a seat on the UN Security Council, which only happened in four periods: 1951-52, 1954-55, 1961 and 2009-10. Given that the map was circulating in New York at least as late as the 1970s, it is most likely that the map originated in 1961, although it may have been reprinted on several occasions thereafter. 1961 is also a date that coincides with the beginning of an Armenian diaspora-driven movement to raise awareness of the severity of the Armenian Genocide in American and global society during its fiftieth anniversary.

The illustration contains a wealth of information that seeks to cover everything that the Armenian people faced during the last years of the Ottoman Empire and the ultimate consequences. The main towns and cities where the Armenian population was exterminated are marked with pink circles (although it is clear that not all of them are marked). The white circles with pink stripes (only four) refer to the few localities that could be saved from extermination thanks to resistance. The pink territory in the upper right corresponds to the territory of the Soviet Republic of Armenia, while the pink-striped territory shows the territory that the authors consider to be illegally occupied by Turkey. Also shown in yellow is the territory recognised by Turkey under Article 89 of the 1920 Treaty of Sèvres, which the Armenian diaspora also does not recognise as sufficient.

The texts accompanying the map include an excerpt from Paul Deschanel, president of France in 1920 and president of the Chamber of Deputies and the French Academy, condemning Turkey for the murder of Armenians.

This is just one of many maps that have been published over the past 100 years to raise awareness of the Armenian Genocide. In the catalogue there are another published by the Armenian National Institute in 1998, The new, somewhat more formal and less colourful.

Sources

Watertown Free Public Library / Digital Commonwealth

PJ Mode Collection / Cornell University Library

This map, compiled by A.
