Irancarto was a cartographic portal about Iran created by the <em>Centre national de la recherche scientifique<\/em> of France (CNRS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iran reached its greatest extent under Shah Ismail I in the early 16th century, although multiple clashes reduced the territory to that marked with a purple line in 1722. This border underwent changes, including the Treaty of Constantinople in 1724, in which the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire divided up much of Iran, although all of these changes were reversed in later treaties. With that border Iran entered the 19th century, when multiple changes caused it to lose or gain territory to other powers. On the map, these powers are represented by the following colours:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Russian Empire<\/strong>, in indigo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ottoman Empire<\/strong>, in yellow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>British Empire<\/strong>, in green.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Oman<\/strong>, in purple.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Afghanistan<\/strong>, in brown.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Iran<\/strong>, in beige.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The arrows show the continuous pressure of the great powers in the region: the Ottoman Empire from the west, the Russian Empire from the north and the British Empire from the east. These territorial changes extended from the Treaty of Gulestan (1813), where Iran lost part of its possessions in the Caucasus, to the independence of Bahrain and the territorial agreements with the new country in 1971.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The map shows that, despite peripheral losses, Iran's territorial core has remained intact since the 16th century.
