Each of these three variables takes a value between 0 and 1, with the aim of making them globally comparable. These three values are used to calculate the geometric mean that represents the HDI, a number between 0 and 1, with a higher value the closer it is to 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The author uses a range of colours from dark red through yellow to dark blue to show the human development index in each subdivision of the continent. At the high end are Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Macau, Israel and regions of Japan and South Korea.
