This map, created by\u00a0Peter Atwood<\/a>\u00a0in 2022, shows the route taken by Joshua Slocum for the world's first solo circumnavigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1895, Joshua Slocum set sail from Boston to circumnavigate the globe solo aboard the Spray<\/em>. As the author shows on the map with a red line, Slocum crossed the Atlantic Ocean with the intention of using the Suez Canal. Due to piracy, he decided to change course and head south, skirting Cape Horn and reaching the Pacific Ocean. After stopping in Samoa, he reached Australia, circumnavigated it to the north and crossed the Indian Ocean to the Cape of Good Hope. He finally returned in 1898, after more than three years at sea and travelling 74,000 kilometres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
