This world map was published by Rand McNally in 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rand McNally is an American cartographic publisher that has been publishing maps since the mid-19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, they began producing educational maps, including many atlases and wall maps of the world, such as this one from 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This map has the unusual feature of being centred on America, with Asia split in half, some parts shown on the right and others on the left. The aim was to focus the projection on the United States, given that this was the educational context for which the map was intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Rand McNally was the publisher behind the Robinson projection<\/a>, Created in 1963, this wall map makes deliberate use of the Mercator projection, as it shows North America larger and less distorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
