This map, published by\u00a0The seventeenth<\/a>\u00a0in 2020, shows the monumental complex of the Pyramids of Giza (or Guiza), near Cairo, Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pyramids are one of the most iconic legacies of Ancient Egypt. They were built as a final resting place for the pharaohs from 2630 BC onwards. Although more than a hundred pyramids are known to exist, the most popular and well-known are those of Cheops (Khufu), Khafre and Menkaure, erected on the Giza plateau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This map shows these three pyramids, as well as all the other archaeological remains of this important necropolis. The largest pyramid in the complex, that of Cheops, has a base measuring 230 x 230 metres and reached a height of 150 metres, making it one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next to the pyramids are extensive fields of mastabas arranged in a grid pattern for officials and minor relatives of the pharaohs. The pyramid complex of Khafre, in particular, also contains the Great Sphinx, a mythical creature carved from limestone that stands beside the path leading to the entrance of the pyramid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
