This map, published in 1857 by the General Inspection of Quarries<\/em> (General Quarry Inspection), shows the situation of the catacombs of Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The catacombs of Paris were constructed between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, taking advantage of an extensive network of mines and underground galleries that existed in the city. It was a process that lasted several decades, with different phases, until the final situation was reached. You can read more about this in this article.<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This map shows the state of the catacombs, indicating the areas that were accessible thanks to masonry work (shown in different shades of red). Superimposed on the galleries, the map also shows the urban layout that existed at the time and the streets that were located above this section of the catacombs. Today, this layout remains almost intact, although the names of almost all the streets have changed, with the sole exception of Rue de la Tombe Issoire, in the lower right-hand corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
