This map, drawn up by Ricardo Casielles and published in 1910, shows the city of Gij\u00f3n, in Asturias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1910, Gij\u00f3n had around 50,000 inhabitants, and the city's entire economy was heavily based on industry. This map shows how the entire western part of the city, on the right-hand side of the map, was almost entirely devoted to factories. All that industrial activity declined, and that part of the city had to be reclaimed at the end of the 20th century, among other things, by creating a new artificial beach in the western part of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gij\u00f3n was already growing, but neighbourhoods that are now central to the city, such as La Bra\u00f1a, El Llano and Laviada, were still in their infancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
