It is dated 1699 and, given the iconography on the outside, is thought to have been originally published as part of a Bible.

On the map, the author shows two hemispheres. The one on the left represents the visible stars and the constellations associated with them, with the Big Dipper in the centre. The one on the left represents the map of the world, centred on the north pole and with the equator as the outer circle.

On the outside, there are multiple images with religious iconography. Beginning with the upper left-hand side, we can see scenes from the Creation, as recounted in Genesis. In the lower part, also from left to right, key scenes from the Bible are depicted, such as the temptation of the apple, the tower of Babel, Moses and the Ten Commandments and the crucifixion of Christ.

Sources

Map of the heavens and the earth

This map is the work of British cartographer Philip Lea.
