This map, created by Fletcher Willis Hewes and Henry Gannett, was published in 1883 as part of Scribner's Statistical Atlas of the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The map shows the results of the popular vote by county in the 1880 presidential election. This illustration uses red to show counties where the Democratic vote won and blue for those where the Republican vote won. The use of these colours was entirely arbitrary, as the current convention (red for Republicans and blue for Democrats) did not become the de facto standard until the late 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this in mind, it can be seen that the Democratic Party received the most votes throughout the south, while the Republican Party was more popular in the north. This trend would be reversed throughout the 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
