This map, created in 2008 by David Andrew Eccles for Wikimedia Commons, shows the migration routes of the first peoples who colonised the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David Eccles created this map as part of his doctoral thesis, in which he analysed the DNA of populations in the Pacific Ocean, particularly in Polynesia, in order to trace the routes taken by early humans as they populated the various islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the map, the Polynesian region, one of the three regions into which the Pacific Ocean is divided, is marked by a blue triangle. These islands were reached around 800 BC via Samoa. From there, navigators reached the Cook Islands around 700 AD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three extremes of Polynesia were the last to be conquered by mankind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
