This map was published by The War Map Publishing Company<\/em> (War map editorial) in the United States in 1898. It has been preserved since 1909 in the Library of Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The map shows the situation of the Spanish-American War from the perspective of the United States. All American possessions are shown in red and Spanish possessions in yellow. Erroneously, the map marks the Cape Verde archipelago as Spanish, even though it was under Portuguese control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The red lines are used to represent the distances between the main American ports and the ports of Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Canary Islands, and Cadiz. The illustration is complemented by two tables listing the main ships of the United States (top left) and Spain (centre). The Spanish ships destroyed in the Battle of Manila are crossed out with red lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
